Digital Smarts: AI as your BS Detector
Have you ever clicked on an online news article, read a fascinating story about a health breakthrough or a must-have gadget, and felt an immediate urge to buy it?
An advertorial might have targeted you! An advertorial is a sophisticated advertisement disguised as objective journalism.
As a tech teacher & bridge, I know digital literacy isn't just about knowing how to tap a screen. It's about understanding & spotting how the modern internet is built to influence us. Here is how you can use basic digital literacy and help from AI to spot online marketing disguised as news.
1. "Too Good to be True" Red Flags
The Pitch: "This simple trick/supplement solved my problem overnight!"
The Reality: Whether it’s hormone boosters, memory supplements, or miracle cleaning products, real-world results take time. When an article claims instant, effortless transformations, it is leveraging a classic copywriting technique designed to trigger impulsive buying.
2. Illusion of "Science-Backed" Claims
The Pitch: "Clinically proven and backed by peer-reviewed science."
The Reality: Supplement and gadget marketers frequently cherry-pick weak data. They often rely on tiny, short-term trials funded by the manufacturers themselves, or studies conducted in test tubes that don't translate to human biology. True digital literacy means questioning the source of the "science" before entering your credit card info.
3. Follow the Money “Affiliate Disclosure”
This is the ultimate tech-support giveaway. Somewhere near the top or bottom of these articles, you will find a tiny line of text that looks like this:
"When you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission."
This disclosure means the primary goal isn't to inform you. It’s to get you to click their tracking links so they can generate funds. And there is nothing wrong with that. That is good to know!
Use AI as Your Personal Web Filter
Don't spend hours researching to spot these tricks. Copy the text of a questionable article, paste it into an AI tool, and ask it a simple, direct question/prompt similar to:
"Analyze this article. Identify the facts, myths, marketing pitch, affiliate links, commercial motivations, and the facts."
By using AI as a shield, you can quickly separate genuine news from clever sales pitches.
