Marketplace - Payment Scams
The Fake Pickup & P2P Payment Trap
Protect yourself from “Marketplace” scammers targeting sellers.
As technology evolves, so do the tactics used by online scammers. If you sell items on local platforms like Nextdoor or Facebook Marketplace, learn to be aware of a persistent scam targeting everyday sellers.
The Anatomy of the Scam
Remote Buyer: The scammer reaches out to buy your item quickly and makes up an excuse, such as recovering from a road accident or being out of town, etc. for why they cannot meet in person.
Surrogate Pickup: To bypass face-to-face verification, they arrange for a family member or proxy to pick up the item on their behalf.
"Pending" Payment Trick: They push for digital payment apps (Zelle, Venmo, PayPal, Cash App, or Chime) and often invent platform mechanics, such as claiming they can "mark the payment as pending" on the marketplace until the item is received.
Fake Notification: Victims frequently receive fake, convincing, fraudulent emails purporting to be from a bank or payment provider, claiming the transfer is stuck and that the seller must pay a fee or upgrade to a "business account" to unlock the funds.
How to Protect Yourself
Protecting yourself online comes down to a few fundamental rules:
Insist on Cash for Local Pickups: Ideally, in-person transactions may use physical cash. If a buyer claims they cannot provide cash and insists exclusively on digital peer-to-peer transfers for a local pickup, walk away.
Trust Your Banking App, Not Screenshots: Never hand over merchandise based on an email notification or a text message screenshot. Log directly into your financial institution's official app to verify settled funds.
Meet in Safe Zones: If you are meeting someone locally, choose high-visibility public areas, banks, libraries, large crowded stores, always during the daylight!
